Ford confirms 300-mile electric SUV by 2020

Ford will add a battery-electric SUV to its range by 2020 as part of a 13-strong line-up of electrified vehicles launching before the end of the decade.

The electric SUV and plug-in hybrid Transit Custom will both be sold in Europe.

Due for launch by 2020, the new crossover will have an estimated range of at least 300 miles, and will be produced in North America but will also make it to Europe and Asia. It’s unclear whether it will be part of the Kuga or Edge line-ups or a stand-alone model.

The company is also launching its first electrified commercial vehicle in the form of a Transit Custom plug-in hybrid, which will start tests in Europe this year, ahead of a 2019 launch date.

The newcomers are the first of 13 new electrified vehicles set to launch before 2020, as Ford invests $4.5bn in the technology. Wireless charging is also being tested in the United States and Europe.

North America will also get hybrid versions of the Mustang and Ford F-150 pickup, the former said to offer the performance of a V8 engine and the latter functioning as a mobile generator. Two new police pursuit vehicles will also be available, both with hybrid technology.

The range of new electric vehicles will be backed up by services and solutions, including EV fleet management, route planning and telematics solutions.

Mark Fields, Ford president and CEO, said: “Our investments and expanding line-up reflect our view that global offerings of electrified vehicles will exceed gasoline-powered vehicles within the next 15 years.”
