The UN’s Global Road Safety Week (6-12 May) is currently taking place and Brake says that conference, at the St John's Hotel, Solihull on Thursday 13th June 2013 is an unmissable opportunity to learn about best practice in fleet risk Management.

This year, for the first time, the flagship conference is being combined with Brake's fleet safety awards. The combined event will showcase best practice in fleet safety and risk management, including community engagement, followed by a breakfast networking event on the morning of Friday 14 June.

The conference, sponsored by Aviva, will provide an opportunity to hear from a range of academic and practitioner speakers on key fleet safety issues, as well as best practice examples from organisations. Programme highlights include:

The programme will include a talk from Dr Will Murray, research director, Interactive Driving Systems and Phillip Darby, PhD student, Loughborough University (retired Lecturer in Statistics, Napier University) on "the influence of managers on fleet vehicle crashes: an application of mixed, multi-level models". Murray and Darby will demonstrate the importance of managers to the success of fleet safety policies, and suggest ways to improve fleet safety through interventions at the higher levels of an organisation.

In addition, Neil Shaw, fleet training manager at Ocado, will speak on "successes and stumbling blocks: implementing in-vehicle technology". Shaw will discuss how Ocado overcame barriers to implementing in-vehicle technology to win a Brake fleet safety award in 2012.

Other confirmed conference speakers include: Joseph Giocomin, director of the Human Centred Design Institute at Brunel University; Dr Lisa Dorn, reader in driver behaviour and director of the Driving Research Group, Cranfield University; and Rory Morgan, national logistics general manager, Iron Mountain. Themes to be covered include using technology to improve fleet safety, community engagement and fleet safety and effective partnership working.

Roslyn Cumming, professional engagement manager at Brake, says: ‘Global Road Safety Week is a great time for fleets to consider their community impact and book tickets to the Fleet Safety Conference. It is a superb opportunity for operators and suppliers to gain valuable insights into saving costs and preventing casualties through best practice.
