Emissions Analytics launches real-world NOx database

By / 8 years ago / Latest News / No Comments

The EQUA Air Quality Index, launched by Emissions Analytics, is the first time the company has made data gathered from its Portable Emissions Measurement Systems and on-road testing accessible for free online.

There are 450 vehicles in the database, of which a third are Euro 6 models. The data places in eight categories, from A to H, based on their NOx emissions in grams per kilometre, and users can sort and search the results by manufacturer and model, fuel type, engine size and air quality rating.

Rating

Lower bound (g/km, exclusive)

Upper bound (g/km exclusive)

Reference Point

A

 0.00  0.08

Meets Euro 6 limit for diesels and Euro 4 limit for petrols

B

0.08  0.12

Meets 1.5 Conformity Factor under Euro 6 Real Driving Emissions regulation (required by January 2020 for new models, January 2021 for new registrations)

C

0.12  0.18

Meets Euro 5 limit for diesels (and similar to 2.1 Conformity Factor under Euro 6 Real Driving Emissions regulation, required by September 2017 for new models, September 2019 for new registrations)

D

0.18  0.25

Meets Euro 4 limit for diesels

E

0.25  0.50

Meets Euro 3 limit for diesels

F

 0.50 0.75

Equal to roughly 6-8 times Euro 6 limit

G

 0.75 1.00

Equal to roughly 8-12 times Euro 6 limit

H

 1.00

None

Equal to roughly 12 times Euro 6 limit

Of the 62 Euro 6 diesels included in the database, only seven met their emissions limit on the road, of which six are Volkswagen Group models. Only a third (19 vehicles) meet the Euro 5 limit, while ten of the diesels would not meet Euro 3 limits, which were introduced in 2000.

The data is independently funded, based on tests carried out using a Portable Emissions Measurement System (PEMS) attached to the car during a road route to analyse exhaust content including NOx emissions. Emissions Analytics says it wants the index to complement forthcoming changes to the European test cycle, which come into force next year and are aimed at addressing the gap between laboratory testing and real-world performance.
