Drivers to benefit from cheaper fuel in Europe

New data from the RAC Foundation shows that although motorists in the UK are still paying about 117p per litre for petrol – the fourth highest price in the European Union – the fuel is cheaper almost everywhere else across the EU.

Steve Gooding, director of the RAC Foundation, said: “This is a big weekend for trips to the continent with the majority of state schools breaking up over the last few days.

“Assuming UK holidaymakers can get past what seems to be the now routine disruption in and around Calais then they should at least benefit from cheaper fuel as they drive across Europe.

“Diesel is cheaper in every other EU country and only the Netherlands, Italy and Denmark currently have more expensive petrol than we do.

“Part of the reason for this holiday bonus is the strong pound but it is also down to varying policies on fuel taxation. Before tax the UK actually has competitively priced fuel compared with the rest of Europe. But it is a different story after tax is added. Currently Mr Osborne pockets two-thirds of what drivers here pay at the pumps.”
