Connected cars to be 90% of 2020 new car market

By / 10 years ago / Latest News / No Comments

In its 2014 Connected Car Industry Report, the company surveyed 5,012 adults split almost evenly across Brazil, Germany, Spain, the United Kingdom and United States of America, to investigate their attitudes towards the new technology.

This showed 70% of respondents were interested in connected cars or already drove one, while 80% expect the same connectivity they get at home, work or from their smartphone while they are driving. Half of those surveyed listed smartphone connectivity or connected services among the most important features of their next car purchase.

Yet the interests behind this are varied. The survey showed 30% of Brazilian respondents were interested in social media, while only 9% of British participants felt the same. Sharing driving data to reduce insurance costs was listed by 38% overall, and the UK was the highest here at 54%, but 31% of those studied said they didn’t want to share any driving information.

Connected cars also have potential beyond entertainment – 60% of respondents said they would be interested to check a car’s status via a smartphone or tablet before making a long journey, and 34% said sharing diagnostic information so garages could bid for work would be a desirable feature.

Pavan Mathew, head of connected car, Telefonica, said:  ‘We can expect to see a gradual creep of connectivity into vehicles over the next few years but there won’t be an explosion over the next 12 months. The reason for this lies in the complexity of the challenges that connectivity is trying to address.

‘While OEMs still have a way to go before they break out of their traditional role as a manufacturer and become a full, connected service provider, they certainly have a strong, trusted base to build from.’

Telefonica, which trades in the UK as O2, provides the data connection used in for the internet-connected infotainment system in the Tesla Model S (pictured), and partnered with experts from with Ford, General Motors, Jaguar Land Rover, Kia Nissan, Renault and Volkswagen to produce the report.
