Citroën Ami electric mobility solution to arrive in UK in 2022

Citroën has confirmed its tiny Ami two-seater electric mobility solution will launch in the UK in spring 2022 after “unprecedented interest”.

The Ami is capable of speeds of up to 28mph and has a range of up to 46 miles

Revealed in February 2020, the Ami is based on the Ami One Concept that launched at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show. Technically a quadricycle, not a car, it’s positioned to not just rival city cars but also to provide an alternative to micromobility solutions such as scooters, bicycles and mopeds, and even public transport.

It’s small enough (just 2.41m long) and light enough to be driven without a licence in some markets – enabling 14-year-olds to drive it in France. But a full licence will be needed in the UK.

It’s also on sale in other markets, including Italy, Spain, Belgium and Portugal – to date it’s had 9,000 orders – and it’s available through carsharing schemes, while a commercial version – My Ami Cargo – has also launched.

The Ami is capable of speeds of up to 28mph and has a range of up to 46 miles. The 5.5kWh lithium-ion battery, housed flat under the floor, can be recharged via the on-board electric cable, with a 220V socket giving a full charge in around three hours.

UK versions of the Ami will remain left-hand drive – Citroën said this will benefit the driver by allowing them to exit the vehicle kerbside when parking at the roadside in city centres. It’s also been engineered with an incredibly tight turning circle and its compact footprint also enables it to navigate busy streets and fit into narrow parking spaces.

The decision to bring the Ami to the UK follows a campaign that saw more than 12,000 customers express interest in the model.

Eurig Druce, managing director of Citroën UK, said: “I am absolutely delighted to announce that Citroën Ami is launching in the UK. With cities and urban areas introducing stricter limits for vehicles, and people demanding new mobility solutions, Ami shows once again how Citroën is adapting to meet the demands of the times. Citroën Ami is a new all-electric mobility solution for the UK that’s totally unique – fun, exciting and accessible to all.

“After thousands of UK buyers have already registered their interest in Citroën Ami, we are very excited to confirm that the Ami will arrive in the country in spring 2022.”

UK pricing hasn’t been revealed but Citroën says it will be “ultra-competitive” and there will be a wide range of personalisation options.

Reservations for those who haven’t already registered will open from Monday 27 September.
