The newly released data from the Society of Motor Manufacturers & Traders (SMMT) show that output rose 3.1% last year to over 1.5 million units. This is the highest volume since 2007, and is a positive sign that the UK economy is growing strongly.

Commenting on the news, BVRLA chief executive Gerry Keaney said: ‘This growth would not be possible without fleet and business sales. BVRLA members purchase around 80% of UK-manufactured vehicles sold in this country, and are key to helping UK vehicle production reach record-breaking levels by 2017.’

Industry analysts have predicted that output will reach record levels of around two million units by 2017.
