BMW to debut live safety data from Here

BMW is to offer real-time safety alerts from mid-2018 under a partnership with digital maps provider Here Technologies.

BMW 520d Touring

BMW will offer Here Safety Services from mid-2018.

The carmaker will be the first to offer the new Here Safety Services, which will debut on BMW models from mid-2018.

The cloud-based services include hazard warnings, which provides alerts on potential issues such as slippery roads and reduced visibility, along with the Here Road Signs service, which provides up-to-date traffic signage information, including permanent and dynamic speed limits.

Info is delivered to drivers and passengers through the car’s head unit display, or to the car’s Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) to support automated safety functions.

Live data is provided from a fleet of vehicles equipped with sensors, including hazard lights, fog lights, camera, emergency brakes and electronic stability control. In total, more than 10 million vehicles equipped with sensors are expected to be on the roads in 2019 and will also be used to support mapping technology for automated driving.

The BMW announcement came as both Bosch and Continental revealed they have acquired a 5% stake in Here, which was purchased from Nokia in 2015 by Audi, BMW and Daimler. Here’s work with Continental will cover automated driving and mobility services while the Bosch collaboration will span automotive, transportation and the industrial Internet of Things.
