Anglian Water propels EV plans further with new salary sacrifice scheme

Anglian Water has deployed a new salary sacrifice scheme from Tusker as part of its drive to reach net zero carbon emissions by 2030.

Anglian Water is also supporting staff going electric by installing a series of new charging points across its sites

The water company has already committed to replacing 90% of its small vehicles with electric equivalents by 2030, and the new salary sacrifice scheme will now help its grey fleet go electric.

The scheme will allow employees to get the use of a brand-new electric car for a fixed monthly amount, taken directly from their gross salary and saving them on tax and National Insurance while they pay just 2% in Benefit-in-Kind until 2025.

The benefit also includes maintenance, fully comprehensive insurance, roadside assistance in the UK and Europe, contactless home delivery, and a courtesy car if the employee’s new car is ever off the road.

Anglian Water is also supporting staff going electric by installing a series of new charging points across its sites in the East of England and Hartlepool. Some 127 charging units will be deployed, enabling staff to charge their own vehicles as well as the company’s fleet. At several sites, these charging units will be powered by renewable energy – including solar, wind and bioresources – generated by Anglian Water.

The company is also installing charging points at employees’ home addresses wherever possible – the vast majority of its electric standby vehicles go to colleagues’ home address when they are not at work. It’s also teamed up with suppliers to ensure that employees are not out of pocket on charging costs; the software installed automatically connects to the charging points and sends the energy bill for EV charging directly to Anglian Water.

The scheme is expected to further drive employee engagement with Anglian’s electric vehicle programme; already 96% of operational staff have said they are happy with their new electric van. And 73% of company cars on order are now electric.

Under its EV commitment, more than 300 fully electric and hybrid vehicles will hit the East of England’s roads over the coming months, including 40 range-extended hybrid vans, 86 fully electric small vans and 180 electric cars.

Other strategic parts of the company’s net zero route map, announced in July 2021, will see its medium-sized vehicles move to hydrogen or alternative fuels, and 55% of HGVs use liquefied natural gas by 2030.

Sally Purbrick, head of reward at Anglian Water, said: “Our people are at the heart of what we do, and we want to bring them along as we move to a greener future. We’re really hoping the salary sacrifice scheme, along with support for colleagues who have an Anglian Water electric vehicle, will help support us and our people to reach net zero carbon emissions.”
