Anglian Water is accelerating its electric vehicle rollout, with more than 300 fully electric and hybrid vehicles hitting the region’s roads over the coming months.

The additions including 60 LEVC VN5 range-extended hybrid vans and 43 fully electric small vans – which join the existing 33 Vivaro-e electric vans.

The water company is also expanding its company car fleet, with 182 fully electric company cars already in service and a further 112 on order. A total of 40 of these will be delivered and in service by the end of the year. In May, the company also launched its new salary sacrifice scheme through Tusker, focused purely on EVs and aimed at all employees.

The company is also installing more than 120 new charging points on its sites across the East of England and Hartlepool; some powered by renewable energy generated by Anglian Water through sources such as combined heat and power, solar and wind.

Its new electric vehicle deliveries further support the company’s net zero route map, launched in 2021, which will see 90% of small vehicles replaced with electric equivalents, medium-sized vehicles moved to hydrogen or alternative fuels, and 55% of HGVs using liquefied natural gas by 2030.

Mick Farmer, head of fleet services at Anglian Water, said: “Travelling around our region is essential for our teams to be able to keep taps flowing and toilets flushing every day. But traditional petrol and diesel engines produce a significant part of our carbon emissions every year – so going electric offers an exciting opportunity to build a sustainable future, while continuing to do what we do best.”

Commenting on Anglian Water’s new VN5 vans, Richard Hudson, commercial director at LEVC, said: “Our VN5 model is perfect for businesses like Anglian Water, which are committed to driving down carbon emissions but also put in lots of miles in their day-to-day operations.

“Capable of emitting just 19g of CO2, compared to around 317g emitted by an average diesel engine, as well as 64 miles of range in pure EV mode, or 319 miles using the range extender, these vans offer a low carbon alternative without the range anxiety.”
