Alphabet publishes free drivers’ guide to smart motorways

Available to view here, the guide outlines the three different types of smart motorways and gives handy hints and their usage.

The publication of the guide follows the leasing and fleet management firm’s recent calls for driver re-education on how to use smart motorways after trials of a new-style emergency area started on the M3 smart motorway.

Speaking at the time, Craig Grant, head of account management, said: “The Government has a dedicated website on ‘How to drive on a smart motorway’ already in place but the question is whether this has actually filtered down to everyday drivers. The revamping of our motorways is to be welcomed, but we need to ensure that drivers are properly educated to use these new roads otherwise the improved safety and efficiencies won’t be realised.”

By 2020 there will be nearly 500 miles of smart motorway in the UK, more than double that compared to 2015, with the RAC also having published research that found 52% of drivers don’t know what to do in an emergency.
