University deploys 3G vehicle camera solution to cut insurance costs

3G vehicle camera technology from Intelligent Telematics is to be deployed by the University of Glasgow in a move to cut fleet insurance costs and enhance driver safety.

IT100 3G vehicle camera solution

The University of Glasgow will use the IT1000 device to capture video evidence to prove liability in the event of a collision and to monitor driver behaviour.

The IT1000 device will initially be used on 25 vans before being rolled out across a further 87 fleet vehicles, made up predominantly of cars and minibuses.

Ronald Ford, transport services manager at University of Glasgow, explained: “The IT1000 is clearly the standout solution that provides us with the complete package that meets our precise fleet requirements. Over the past 12 months we have road-tested five other vehicle cameras, but all demonstrated one issue or another in terms of video quality, poor GPS or inadequate connectivity.”

The university will use video evidence captured by the device to prove liability in the event of a collision involving one of its fleet vehicles. This will reduce insurance premiums moving forward, but also speed up the claims process; previously, disputes – even for a minor bump or scrape – have proved incredibly time consuming and the 3G cameras will now allow the office-based transport team to determine fault within minutes of an incident occurring.

The footage will also help the transport team to ensure vehicles are being driven responsibly in line with the university’s safety and duty of care commitment, and will be used to investigate all collisions and review the status of those involved.

Justin White, managing director at Intelligent Telematics, commented: “The IT1000 is the only 3G camera to carry the E1 mark of approval for the aftermarket installation to European manufactured vehicles. Manufactured in Germany and using O2 Telefonica SIM cards, the device possesses the highest available levels of reliability, HD video and 3G connectivity. Our unrivalled commitment to quality is making Intelligent Telematics the partner of choice for a growing number of vehicle operators in the UK, mainland Europe and worldwide.”
