Fleet on fleet – Tracey King at Hydro International

By / 11 years ago / Interview / No Comments

You have other functions to manage as well as fleet. How do you keep control of all of them?

I’m the office manager at the Hydro HQ and manage a number of other functions including mobiles, telephones, office and building maintenance, as well as assisting the UK HR Manager. As fleet management is such an evocative and complicated matter, at times it feels like juggling lots of balls in the air, but it’s all good fun.

What are the main fleet issues for you?

The “credit-crunch” has pressurised businesses to run greener fleets that are cost effective and we are currently doing a fleet review on cost effectiveness and to identify areas for improvement. The whole-life cost option is challenging in that there are so many fixed and variable costs that can be included to derive the end result. Understanding and collating all this information is time consuming, but in the long run will provide an accurate picture of total fleet cost.

Sole or multi supply? And why?

Marshall Leasing are our sole supplier. Marshalls has a tailor-made fleet user choice website based on our fleet policy parameters and this has worked really well as each driver can then choose a car that suits their needs. As I have other job functions, having a proactive leasing partner is key.

Do you run alternatively fuelled vehicles on your fleet – what’s your take on electric vehicles?

There are a couple of Toyota Prius Hybrids on the fleet, but apart from this the use of alternative fuelled vehicle has not been pursued. Most fleet drivers do high contract mileages and I’m not convinced that an electric car would be appropriate.

What would be your advice to someone starting their first fleet job?

Compile a comprehensive spread sheet where at a glance you are able to see all pertinent information relating to the fleet you are managing. Build a good working relationship with your provider as they are an inexhaustible supply of information and guidance.

Your proudest moment?

80% of the fleet was up for renewal during the first quarter of 2012, and all the new cars ordered were delivered on time, with no problems – not an easy exercise to do, bearing in mind there was no let-up in the remaining work in other areas of my job.
