DfT outlines £220m spending to cut congestion

The Department for Transport has announced initial details of how £220m will be spent to cut congestion on the national road network.

The DfT has pledged £220m of funding to cut congestion on the road network.

Announced in the Autumn Statement, the funding will be used to address traffic pinch points, with the chancellor having revealed in this week’s Budget that £90m will be allocated to the North and £23m to the Midlands.

The DfT has now announced that £53m is being allotted to the South East, with £32m for the South West and £16m for the East and set out details of the specific road schemes that will be funded by the initial £110m. Details of how the remaining £110m will be revealed at a later date.

Transport Secretary Chris Grayling said: “These schemes announced today will provide quick relief to millions of drivers and save them from getting stuck in traffic.”

RAC roads policy spokesman Nick Lyes said: “While the Government has in place a long-term Road Investment Strategy, this cash is really about focusing on areas of the network which are chronically congested. It also shows that the Government has listened to the concerns of motorists about congestion getting worse, something we highlighted very clearly in the 2016 RAC Report on Motoring.

“We hope that the schemes in question prove to be fit for purpose and that they really do get traffic moving again. Motorists will be fairly unforgiving if they have to endure more delays while the work is carried out only to find there is little improvement once they are complete.”
