M Sport accounts for the vast majority of orders, and it will be offered on both saloon and Touring models.

The trim level brings sports suspension, a bodykit, bespoke alloy wheels, sports seats, M Sport steering wheel and gearknob.

It will be offered on all engines, including the new 535d. Prices start at £31,270.

The 535d uses a twin-turbocharged 3.0-litre diesel to produce 294bhp yet returning fuel economy of 46mpg.

Elsewhere, BMW has announced details of two new 3 Series models – the Exclusive Edition and the Sport Plus Edition. Both offer several thousand pounds' worth of extra equipment yet cost £595 more than the models on which they are based.

The Exclusive Edition costs £595 more than the SE spec that it's modelled on and adds chrome exterior trim, metallic paint, leather seats, bamboo interior trim and a leather steering wheel, as well as Bluetooth compatibility and 17-inch alloy wheels. Speccing these items separately would cost £3,000.

The Sport Plus Edition is based on M Sport trim and adds leather seats with bespoke stitching, metallic paint, Bluetooth, chrome exhausts and 18-inch alloy wheels. This results in a saving of £2,325.

Both models go on sale in September, with prices starting at £24,075.
