£64m government funding to boost cycling and walking to work
The Department for Transport is to invest £64m in projects to encourage more people to cycle and walk to work.
Announced by the Transport Minister, the funding will be used to support initiatives including more safety and awareness training for cyclists and bike repair and maintenance courses but will also look to promote other travel alternatives, including an increased focus on car sharing clubs and enhancing real time bus information through smart phone apps or information at bus stops.
Transport Minister Andrew Jones said: “We are committed to improving how people travel and this investment will ensure that people’s journeys are cheaper, safer and better for the environment. It will help people to become more active and better transport planning will reduce congestion on our roads – particularly at peak times.”
